Biscuit and Checke’s mum was lucky enough to score a session referred by Alexis, whose four Greyhounds I photographed early last year. Initially we’d decided just to photograph Biscuit, as they’d never had much luck getting good photos of his big sister Checke. They brought her along anyway though and, well, you’ll see what happened!

To begin with though, meet Biscuit.

The session took place at a park on Mount Tamborine and after scoping out the area and deeming it safe, Biscuit was let off lead. Not 5 minutes into our session, he spotted a rabbit! Luckily with some quick thinking by Mechalle and excellent training, Biscuit was recalled and a crisis averted. Anyone who owns or is familiar with sight hounds will know this is not an easy feat!

After a bit of a shaky start to life, originating from an unplanned litter which could not be registered as racing dogs and with no less than four different homes by the age of 11 weeks, Biscuit found his way into the home of Mechalle and husband Graeme.

At just 3 and a half years old, he’s actually officially known as Biscuit CCD JDX SD SPD ET – which means he has titles in agility, obedience AND endurance. In fact, he holds the honour of being the first Greyhound in Queensland with the ET (endurance) title and the second in Australia!

What a clever boy!

With all this training under his collar, he also makes a fantastic model, staying just where we put him and responding beautifully to treats and toys being tossed around. Of course there were birds in the trees to check out too…

Big sister Checke is had a somewhat different start in life. She raced until she was three and a half, then retired. Mechalle and Graeme fostered her and when it was time to move onto her forever home, she had something to say about it – protesting very loudly – until it was decided that she would stay on with her favourite person in the world, Graeme.

On previous occasions when trying for photos, Checke had been a most unwilling model. She seemed to be a lot more relaxed outdoors though (previous attempts had been in a studio) and my sneaky long lens proved a real advantage.

Mechalle noted that Checke never sits down like this but we figured out it must have been because she was on a steep hill, how funny!

Checke was also quite happy lying down in the grass, enjoying the late afternoon sunshine. What a stunning old girl she is at 10 years old.

Towards the end of the session, we managed to get both dogs sitting and laying down in the general vicinity of each other. If there is something I love most about photographing Greyhounds, it’s that they’re usually quite content to stay in the same place for a while, with very little encouragement!

To finish off, how awesome are Checke’s ears! One up, one down.

Checke and Biscuit were both adopted through a great Greyhound rescue organisation called Friends of the Hound. To find out more about adopting a Greyhound of your own, please check out Friends of the Hound Greyhound Adoption Group. They do fantastic work!

I just love Greyhounds. When deciding what breed of dog to get originally, I’d seriously considered adopting one of these beautiful dogs, however they were pipped at the post eventually by my love of Great Danes. There are a lot of misconceptions about the sort of pets that Greyhounds make, mainly due to people mistakenly thinking they have boundless energy and need lots of exercise and a big yard. I’ll put that theory to rest right now by saying, this foursome were the. laziest. dogs. I have ever had the pleasure of working with.

Angel and Tiger were first up. Tiger at 6 years old has never raced, due to his size. He’s a big goofy boy and has been a loved pet for all of his life.

Early on in the session, after a quick sniff around the yard, he settled himself down and was quite content just lying there looking gorgeous.

Alexis had only had him for 6 weeks when we had our session but he’d settled in well already. I love this shot of him enjoying the sunshine in the yard.

He was certainly the most playful of all of them, happily engaging in a game of tug-o-war with me. This was rather exciting apparently, and resulted in him having a brief zoomie episode around the yard for all of about 2 minutes.

Six year old Angel shared the yard with Tiger, and spent most of time lounging around, tongue lolling out sideways from her mouth. Just like this really.

With a bit of rolling around on her back too for good measure.

Angel hasn’t always had it so good. She never raced but came from an abusive home at 3 years old. She has very few of her teeth left and I shudder to think the kind of life she had before she was rescued.

Greyhounds always seem to have their little ears tucked back, I guess to be as streamlined as possible! They do create some lovely ear folds for me to photograph though.

They can also be very expressive – here’s Tiger looking very alert – what a cutie!

The next pair, Kane and Heli, were rather shocked at being asked to hang around in the back yard when there were comfy beds on offer elsewhere, so we relocated to the patio area and set up some plush beds for them there which were much more to their taste.

At 11 1/2 years old, Heli is a beautiful old girl. Due to a shocking injury sustained while racing, she was retired at 3 1/2 years old. She had one litter which didn’t turn out as hoped, so was desexed and rehomed with Alexis’ grandma.

With all the responsibility of having a dog around the place, Heli helped to extend her life at home by another 12 months before she needed to go into a nursing home. Greyhounds are amazing therapy dogs and this is just one of the many cases where they have been beneficial for elderly or sick people. With faces like these, it’s no wonder they give people a new lease on life.

Alexis regularly visits the hospital with her dogs, in fact Kane was adopted specifically with that purpose in mind.

When he retired from racing at 4 1/2 years old, Alexis adopted him and he has spent the last 5 or so years as a therapy dog.

Having photographed this gorgeous foursome, I’ve fallen in love with Greyhounds all over again!

As well as working with her dogs as therapy dogs, Alexis is also a fully qualified canine massage therapist. Kane was a willing model as Alexis did a quick demonstration. These images, along with some of the portraits above, will be used on her upcoming website. I’ll be sure to post a link to it from my Facebook page when it’s live for those of you who might be interested in her massage services.

Alexis also works with ‘Friends of the Hound’ which is a volunteer-based, not-for-profit Greyhound adoption program covering from the Northern Rivers area of NSW through to the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. These guys do a great job of matching Greyhounds that are surplus from the racing industry (and there are a lot of them) with suitable and loving homes.

Frankie’s parents were lucky enough to score a gift certificate for their session and when I found out what kind of dog they had, I was delighted! I’ve been wanting to photograph a French Bulldog ever since I saw one in the flesh. They are such cool little dogs, so different looking and with awesomely photogenic features.

Time was of the essence with Frankie as she’s just on 5 months old and her parents wanted to get some shots of her while she’s still little. We had a couple of false starts with the weather, but on the morning of our session the conditions were perfect. We met at a local waterfront park and the light was just beautiful.

One reason why they wanted to have Frankie photographed quickly, is that over time she’s developing more brindle patterning in her glossy black coat. She was almost pure black when they brought her home but over time, the brindle is creeping in.. and we all know brindle is the naughty colour!

That lovable cheekiness is starting to creep in already and makes a lovely mix with the sweetness already so apparent.

Don’t Frenchies just have the best little faces?

Frankie loves running with her dad and checks with one eye to make sure he’s still there running with her.

Her ears which are usually flipped facing forward, get pinned sideways for better aerodynamics while racing flat out. She’s got the most hilarious flat out run, with her bum out to the side and her back half reaching to overtake the front!

Such a good girl at our session, she happily posed up on the picnic table for us.

Our next location was a short drive down the road to a lovely little boardwalk. It was a popular place for people walking their dogs and we had to keep an eye on the ever-curious Frankie as she was quite happy to wander off with whoever passed by.

I thought having a Great Dane was a conversation starter, but Luna has nothing on Frankie! Pretty much everyone who saw her wanted to know what breed she was, many people having never heard of the breed.

And really, if you saw this sweet face looking up at you, would you be able to pass by? (If you look carefully you can see me in her eye reflection, almost doing aerobics moves trying to get her attention)

Growing next to the boardwalk was a lovely bed of bright yellow flowers, and we couldn’t resist the urge to stick her right in the middle for some Anne Geddes inspired shots.

Towards the end of our session Frankie was tiring out, making it a bit easier for me to get far enough back from her for some shots. Like most puppies, as soon as I got down near the ground she’d run over to investigate!

I held out until the end for my very best attention-grabbing squeaking noises, just to get some awesome head tilt action like this. It worked!

Thanks for being such a great little dog Frankie!

Note to future clients – early starts are most definitely worth doing! This was another very early session – we kicked off at 4.45am to catch that gorgeous first light.

Molly the Staffy is a gorgeous, well behaved little girl who is lucky enough to have a totally devoted owner who obviously loves her to bits.

She gets regular early morning walks to her favourite park where she can run and sniff and cruise around spreading that famous Staffy smile and cheer everywhere she goes. And what an amazing tongue!

And very cute ears.

After we’d finished our walk through the park, we headed back to Molly’s house and chilled out in her backyard. The patio was nice and cool, a good place to stretch out on a hot morning.

It wasn’t long though, and her energy was back again, ready for a game of tug!

I somehow convinced her that modelling was a career path she should seriously consider.

This is probably my favourite shot of the session.

With this one running a close second. I’m so stoked that Molly’s dad is getting this one as a nice big gallery wrap canvas, I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

I recently attended the Great Dane Society of Queensland Championship Show at Durack in Brisbane to take some photos. They aren’t my usual style of photography but Great Danes are ‘my’ breed so I always enjoy watching them and taking photos so their owners can see how beautiful they are!

For some reason, you don’t often see many brindle coloured Danes, it’s probably about the rarest of the showable colours. This gorgeous guy was the only one in attendance on the day.

Fawns generally dominate the showing scene and this show was no exception.

A beautifully marked harlequin – note the pure white background and glossy black patches that have a ‘torn edge’ appearance.

Speaking of glossy black!

The baby puppies are always entertaining to watch, this one was very well behaved and stood nicely while the judge examined her.

Another pretty puppy in black along with one of my favourite fawn girls.

The dogs have to show how well they move as part of the judging process, the girl above girl was flying along and looked amazing.

To finish off, another harlequin. This was her first show back after giving birth to 11 puppies!

These two beautiful Boxers made a stunning pair and were so fun to work with. Garvin, the dark brindle boy, would do anything for food and they both pulled the most hilarious faces in true Boxer form.

The beautiful Blaise had been battling cancer and had recently had a few lumps removed. Despite this she looked great, you would never have guessed!

Unfortunately, Blaise lost her battle with cancer shortly after our photo session. I am so happy though that I managed to create some beautiful photos to remember her by for her loving owner.

Run free, beautiful girl.
