Model Session ~ Ruby the Koolie in Brisbane

When I received Ruby’s commercial model application, I knew I had to meet this beautiful young Koolie. Here’s what her mum had to say about her:

“Ruby absolutely loves attention and being involved in whatever we are doing, hence she is part of the family and is integrated in everything we do. She is always trying to please me and has a cheeky side as well which is adorable. Ruby gets along extremely well with my horse and other farm animals, as long as the chickens don’t run or the chase begins! She is also happy to be dressed up and wear props such as hats etc, she wore a skeleton outfit to our Halloween Party last year. Ruby loves the beach and swimming in rivers/dams.”

I soon arranged a test shoot with Ruby at a brand new location I’d been wanting to test out. It was a bit of a hike to get there, but we had some fun taking some shots along the way. It’s always good to get some exercise too!

Ruby has a really great temperament for doggy modelling – she just has enough spunk, energy and confidence to look great on the go, plus she’s very obedient and responsive and will happily stay in position when it comes time for some more posed shots.

It was important for me to have the sunlight coming through the trees behind Ruby, backlighting her with gorgeous afternoon sunshine. Luckily she has a great ‘stay’ command, meaning I could place her exactly where I needed her!

I love photographing dogs with upstanding ears, they always look so alert! She had a ball on our shoot racing around exploring and fetching sticks for us, hence the crazy tongue.

Although she was not even a year old on the day of our shoot, Ruby had quite a number of tricks under her collar – “Ruby has the following tricks in her repertoire: sit, drop, stay, fetch, beg, roll over (left roll), other roll (right roll), shake (right paw), other (left paw), high five and just started learning high ten.”

I asked her beautiful mum Kristy to demonstrate her high five and with a little bit of encouragement in the form of sticks and treats, she was soon high fiving like a pro! Ruby is going to be starting agility training this year and I am sure she will excel at it.

Did I mention Ruby likes sticks?

Such a stunning looking girl!

We were treated to an absolutely gorgeous day with clear blue skies and a warm, long sunset. I just love the quality of light at this time of day.

Ruby raced up and down the track for us a few times to show off her action skills, right on sunset. How intense is the focus in her eyes!

As we were walking back, I made use of the clear skies and posed Ruby up on a hill for some silhouettes.

If you have a dog who is confident in new situations, good with people and other dogs, has a solid level of training and a special look about them (all breeds or combinations of breeds are considered), please fill out a commercial model application. If your dog meets all the criteria, they’ll be added to the database and if they look and sound especially promising, I’ll contact you to arrange a test shoot so I can upgrade their status to verified. A verified status means your dog will be given preference if any commercial modelling jobs come up that may suit them – how exciting! I look forward to hearing from you soon.
